(June 2010) Scott Grayburn and Gabriel Holbrook have recently started a project evaluating freshwater algae as feedstocks for biofuels. One aspect, supported by an NIU Foundation Venture Grant, involves utilizing existing algae growing in wastewater at the Rock River Water Reclamation District. Starting in July 2010, there is also a new 12 month DOE- funded collaboration with the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. The goal is to produce batches of biodiesel from microalgae for testing in a Diesel engine set up for analysis of power output and exhaust emissions. The work offers exciting and timely opportunities for NIU undergraduate and graduate students to contribute to research into locally-produced “green” fuels from algae.
