The instrumentation
room contains equipment that can be used by all scientists in the Biology
Department. Instruments include
- A Beckman
L8-M ultracentrifuge,
- A Beckman
LS1701 Scintillation counter,
- A Molecular
Dymamics Storm 820 Scanner that produces digital images of radioactive
labeled samples. Typically this equipment is used to collect data from
Southern or Northern blots and does not require x-ray film.
- A Kodak
Gel Logic 200 Imaging system. This contains a CCD camera that can generate
publication quality images. Typically this equipment is used to document
submarine DNA gels or Western blots. Software is available for precise
fragment sizing and colony counting.
- A UVP
gel documentation system. This contains a video camera that generates
low resolution images of DNA gels.
- A Virtis
`freezemobile freeze dryer. This is typically used to dehydrate biological
samples prior to protein or DNA isolation.
