Center for Biochemical and Biophysical Studies

The Center for Biochemical and Biophysical Studies at Northern Illinois University promotes and coordinates biochemical and biophysical research and graduate training within the University. The Center is composed of faculty associates, and their students, whose primary appointments are in the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Psychology, and Family, Consumer and Nutrition Sciences. Activities of the Center include:

• Friday Noon Seminar Series in Fall 2007 will be "Nucleic Acid --- Protein Interactions"---Each semester a new topic of interest to this group is chosen and prominant experts from universities, research institutes and industries in the upper midwest region are invited to visit and present research seminars related to the chosen subject. The seminars are held in Faraday West Rm. 201, at noon each Friday, followed immediately by a luncheon with interested faculty and students.
• Support of Specific Research Opportunities---A portion of the modest budget of the Center is allocated to fund special equipment and commodity requests that enhance research projects of the faculty associates.
• Graduate Training---Both M.S. and Ph.D.-level students of CBBS Faculty are encouraged to complete a designated concentration of courses in biochemistry and biophysics. Opportunities for limited assistantship support are available, and the completion of this concentration is noted on the student’s transcript.
• Graduate Student Grants for Research and Travel--- Students that have registered with the CBBS are eligible for small research and travel grants.
