BASICALLY BLUEGRASS
The “Basically Bluegrass” band is Harold, John and Jake Thorn, Steve Sarver, Ben Dewey, and Keith Snyder (aka family, a teacher & student, and friends). All have had their parent’s music as an influence in their lives, for as long as they can remember. All of the band members are bound together in the enjoyment of the music that they love to play and sing.
Basically Bluegrass describes their musical style as “Retro”. By this they mean they play most of the old standards, along with many old bluegrass songs that are not commonly heard. Their sound is probably closer to the way Bluegrass was originally played than what is popular today. Songs of the Blue Ridge mountains of Virgina or the Shendandoah Valley have special meaning for the band members, as those areas are where their families were found in earlier times.
In June of 2002, Basically Bluegrass put out their
first CD, titled “Crawdad”. Listening to their own recording was an “out-of-body”
experience for the band, as they were finally able to hear themselves from
the audience’s perspective. Basically Bluegrass is highly active in the DeKalb/Sycamore
area, playing retirement homes, family gatherings, benefits and the Sycamore
Jamboree.
