B. megaterium Genomics Workshop
40 faculty, staff, and students from Biology, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and Argonne/FIG participated. We heard a variety of talks about genomics, from Genes 101 to bioinformatic methodology, and current and potentially future applications. It was a great opportunity for people from different backgrounds, but with a common interest, to learn about and discuss timely issues in this field.
Presentations may be viewed by workshop participants here.
The Genomics Workshop was a direct result of the B. megaterium Genome Sequencing Project, sponsored by a National Science Foundation grant to Patricia Vary (NIU), Jacques Ravel (TIGR) and Dave Rasko (Universtiy of Texas Southwestern Medical Center). It's purpose was to bring students and faculty from Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Statistics, and Biology together to better understand and create the future analytical tools and applications of Bioinformatics. Advanced undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff are eligible. This was a rare opportunity to get information on bioinformatics methods, using the range of biological and computer fields, incuding scientists from two of the principle Genome analysis institutions, The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), and Argonne National Laboratories.
